"Hello everyone,
We are the Youth for the World (Y4UW) from Portugal and this year, we are surveying the city of Lisbon with the desire to promote brotherhood. We have embarked on a project consisting of volunteering work among generations. This project is two-fold:
Children’s Project
“Outskirts of Lisbon: can you imagine what goes on in those neighbourhoods of which nobody talks about? Two Comboni Missionaries sisters and a brother have started giving support to some children, who mostly belong to migrant families living in Camarate. The aim of their work is not only to take them off the streets but also to educate them, giving them a sense of rules and moral training, aside from regular school monitoring.
Through some contacts, we have found out that these Missionaries need the help of young volunteers. Since we are available, we have decided give our assistance in the evening (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm). Our aim is to remedy these shortcomings and bring these children some of our joy and specific gifts.”

Accompany on regular or irregular basis adults and seniors who live on their own or residing in nursing homes. Those volunteers who wish to pay regular visits to the elderly, carry out this initiative every 15 days and they are split up into 2 or 3-person teams. They volunteering work consists of listening the elderly persons, conduct recreational activities (board games or sing with them); meet the concrete needs of each person (accompany them for Mass, organize medications, cooking, organizing the house, make small arrangements).
For both projects and in accordance with the number of registered volunteers, we will set up fixed teams that will last of a 3-month period.
It is also possible to perform volunteering work on an irregular basis. In such cases, the volunteer will integrate a fixed team. This may be an opportunity for a new volunteer to give this work a try, or bring along a friend. This type of volunteers can be very helpful in those moments when the availability of volunteers is very limited and this is a chance to make this experience.

GREETINGS FROM CYPRUS!

We Y4UW from Cyprus have adhered to the initiative to have a Christmas that is characterized by mutual welcome and peace. We have organized a rummage sale called "Boutique Chiara Luce" in order to help the people in need, offering them clothes at low prices.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!

Transform each city into a small Bethlehem, capable of welcoming the lonely ones, the marginalized, the poor, the homeless: this is an initiative that the Youth for a United World are carrying out in their own cities.

Christmas in Bethlehem! “It’s a unique opportunity to crown this year through our meeting with the Holy Land Youth for a United World”, shared Maria Guaita, Andrew Camilleri and Claudia Barrero, from the Y4UW international secretariat.

What significance does it have for you to spend Christmas in the Holy Land? We have welcomed this invitation as a proposal to all the Youth for a United World spread all over the planet – narrates Maria Guaita -. The Gospel narrates that Mary and Joseph found no inn to lodge: “the Word came to his own and his own people did not accept him.” We wish to welcome him especially in the lonely ones, the marginalized, the poor and the homeless. Therefore, we commit ourselves to transform each of our cities into a small Bethlehem that hosts the nativity crib that offers a cradle to baby Jesus.”

On daily basis, the mass media offer us images of violence and suffering, exclusion, and we want to respond to this with an even greater love: taking advantage of this Christmas Season to carry out concrete acts of love in favour of our brothers and sisters.”

We wish to get as many people as possible involved in this initiative – concludes Maria – also parishes, institutions, other associations and movements, according to each one’s creativity and possibilities – as Chiara Lubich used to say – “nothing is small that is done out of love”.”

One may post photos or short films of these initiatives on the “Youth for a United World - Holy Land” Facebook Page: (https://www.facebook.com/Y4UW.HOLYLAND?fref=ts).

“All these fragments of fraternity – adds Claudia -, will give witness and document an important step in the fulfilment of the “United World Project”, thus paving the way to universal brotherhood.”

On 4 December 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed 18 December as International Migrants Day. On 18 December 1990, the General Assembly had adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

UN Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations are invited to observe International Migrants Day through the dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, and through the sharing of experiences and the design of actions to ensure their protection.

At the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development in October 2013, Member States unanimously adopted a Declaration in which they recognized the important contribution of migration to development and called for greater cooperation to address the challenges of irregular migration and to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration. The Declaration also emphasized the need to respect the human rights of migrants and to promote international labour standards. The Declaration strongly condemns manifestations of racism and intolerance and stresses the need to improve public perceptions of migrants and migration

In his report to the General Assembly in October 2013, the Secretary-General put forward an ambitious eight-point agenda to “make migration work” for all: migrants, societies of origin and societies of destination alike. “Migration is an expression of the human aspiration for dignity, safety and a better future. It is part of the social fabric, part of our very make-up as a human family,” the Secretary-General said in his remarks.

On December 4th, #FUNDHAIYAN Philippines Fundraiser was hosted at the Hard Rock Café with 10 performances and a silent auction. All proceeds were donated to the Canadian Red Cross to aid in their disaster relief efforts. This event took place 3 weeks after Donata Ling, the main event coordinator, saw the disturbing images of the catastrophic disaster for the first time. Then, she had an idea.

“I felt helpless because the images were horrific, homes were destroyed and towns were abandoned. I couldn’t imagine what I would do in their situation,” said Donata Ling

#FUNDHAIYAN fundraiser was composed of performancesfromvastly differentartistic genres, includingR&Bmusic, rock, acoustic, powerfulvocalsets, anddramaimprovisation from young local talent such as Becky Yonge, Amanda Piron, Glenn Sevillo, Jeremy Walmsley, Esther Lee, Jazmin Jade Aron, Nehemiah Flow, Ryan Field, Jaffa Charles, Edmund Arevalo, Martin Kuwawi and Chyrell Samson. The unique mix of cultures expressed the main theme of the night-we are ONE with the ‘survivors’ not victims of the Super Typhoon. The name #FUNDHAIYAN allowed anyone to tag their photos and post themonInstagram. In doing this,Funsnap.me, Australia’s most innovative photography event service, was able toprintthese photosfrom across the world.

After speaking withafriendwho was busy organizing #FUNDYOLANDA- a fundraiser in Adelaide on 30th November,Donatawas inspired to do the same in Toronto.

“I started to connect with friends, especiallyFilipinofriends, but it wasn’t enough,” said Donata Ling

She contacted ISX, Canada’s leading international student tour operator,in hopes of getting help with promotions. Thankfully, Sonia Cheng, the general manager of ISX, was enthusiastic in supporting the fundraising efforts. She immediately got to work byprintingflyers and promoting to their extensive network.

The silent auction was supported by local businesses such as Sports Centre, XTC Clothing Inc.,and theHard Rock Café.  Other Toronto favorites were also made available to bidders, includingtickets to the CN Tower, Medieval Times, a night stay at the Holiday Inn,andAirport Express Bus ticketsamong others.

In addition to the fundraising success, the evening engaged young people to contribute their experience and time- something more valuable than money.

“I had an amazing time and lots of fun meeting new people and performing at Hard Rock Café for the first time,” said one of the performers Glenn Sevillo

In total, the fundraising efforts are slightly shy of $2000, but the Canadian government is matching dollar for dollar until December 23rd.#FUNDHAIYAN is still collecting donations through an online portal:www.redcross.ca/#fundhaiyan.  Furthermore, fordonations over $10, a free t-shirt is given which states:“Let’s help, let’s help, let’s go” in Tagalog, sponsored by the Filipino TV network ABS-CBN. New York Youth for a united World (Y4UW) (November 8, 2013)

The Y4UW of New York, in collaboration with the youth of “Muslims Giving Back”, an organization that reaches out to those in need in the city of New York, organized a movie night to watch “The Pursuit of Happiness”.

The admission ticket? A coat to warm a homeless in this big city during the winter. The high moment of the evening was when one of our Muslim friends told his experience of being a homeless himself while in school.

It is wonderful to know that at least some of the most needed in NYC will feel warmer this winter.

A message from Eleanor and Anton Villegas, from Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental Island, Philippines
“Thank you for all that you are doing to help!
Read more ...We are very well and we were spared from the typhoon Haiyan and so together with the Youth for a United World in Dumaguete, we are carrying out several initiatives to assist those affected by the typhoon.
We have launched this slogan: “I was spared from the typhoon. I want to give up, to give back!” A night to raise funds for the victims was a success were we did a link up with the Y4UW in Cebu who were repacking relief goods and the Y4UW in Manila who did their fundraising too. There is also a video from some Y4UW from other countries participated Giving Up something to Give Back to the Philippines!”

Give up that pricey meal with a friend in exchange for a home cooked one with mom, a movie date with girlfriend for an evening stroll around town (why not invite your best friend too?), or that pair of shoes you've been saving up for months for cheaper ones... then donate the rest!
Open your closets. Grab a shirt, and ask yourself if it made you happy wearing it, think of how much happier someone who needs it more will be. Then REPEAT.

Give back what matters to you most: your time, your attention, your freedom, your YOUTH, and put it at the service of others.
We can only do so much for a number of people, but there is a way where we are able to love EVERYONE concretely: PRAYER. Even your daily problems, the most little acts of love, the simplest joys: offer them BACK to the victims.

When we give up, to give back to others, we set ourselves free from the things that bind us to this world, opening up our lives to a new one --- a more united world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyufXUQ9Vjs

A letter by Robert Samson to the Filipinos

Many people have often asked when tragedy happens or innocent people die and suffer: "Where is God in this moment?"

Then I remember that once there was a Lutheran pastor and theologian. His name was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was an anti-Nazi dissident who was eventually caught by the Gestapo. He wrote many beautiful writings on the role of Christianity in our secular world which have become greatly important in our secular world - but in one instance, a co-prisoner was incontrollable as they both witnessed a 6-year old child about to be hanged. This prisoner questioned, "But that boy is innocent - where is God in all of this???"

Bonhoeffer turned to him and said, "God is right here - and right there in that image of the boy being put to death."

I wanted to tell you about this little story - that our All Loving, Almighty God is certainly One who has the power to put an end to many of our problems, but mostly, this is the same God Who watches and continues to love us from where He is, even through the experience of Suffering and Pain. There is always a plan of His Love behind all of these.

Now, that we've received the news about the devastation that the typhoon had done passing the Philippines recently leaving thousands and thousands of dead doesn't mean that God is not anymore with the Filipinos. In fact it is in these moments that GOD is there with us, with you. We just have to find Him again in our hearts...

Humanity has often times asked God, why do we all have to suffer while we're on earth... answers that some so called experts gave came more of a mystery rather than something concrete that could have helped each one of us ease the pain.

Then I remember something that consoled me when I lost both my mom and dad in a period of 21 days when they died in 2001. I remembered a modern mystic by the name of Chiara Lubich who once said: “There are two secrets in life: Love and Suffering.

Suffering is the way we love God and Love is the way that God loves us."

Why is it that notwithstanding the great difference of Love and Suffering, they both seemed to be the same? My mind can only murmur that they could be the same because in heaven, Love and Suffering would be both in their perfect state and therefore only Pure Love remains. Suffering is simply gone!!!

So I translated these words this way: “God could have saved the world in a million ways, with a breath, a gaze, a smile, a gesture, a word, no, He had to send us His Son to save us, saving us meant He had to suffer and die for us.

If God used Suffering and Death as a means for our Salvation, meant that Suffering is really an important part of life: human and divine, perhaps because suffering here on earth would mean the highest peak of Love that God can love us."

When Jesus was on the cross and shouted gasping for breath: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?", He gave us His maximum Love. It is in the peak of suffering that Jesus loved us most. Together with Jesus, we can try to transform this suffering into love for neighbour.

Filipino brothers, sisters and friends, let's always remember, we are never alone. In these impossible, difficult moments are where God is more present. Our family and friends are present. Hope is present. I'm there with you, most especially in the most difficult moments you'll encounter.

My love and prayers goes to each one of you and your families.
